Discover The Town Of South Shields In Tyne And Wear

South Shields sits on the north east coast of England on the estuary of the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear. The coast is well known for its beautiful beaches, rocky coastline, Roman and Christian heritage and long maritime history. South Shields contains aspects of all these in abundance and is the birthplace of world famous author Catherine Cookson.

The town centre is an attractive mixture of old building and modern shopping areas with excellent nightlife. The Town Hall was built in the 18th Century and is the site of an art installation which highlights the building at night. On the opposite side of the town square is the 200 year old church of St Hilda. It stands on a site which has had a church for around 1500 years.

Once guarding the main supply route for the Roman Empire in Britain, Arbeia Fort is now a Hadrians Wall World Heritage Site and Museum. The site has been fully excavated and restored, giving insights into how the Romans lived here. Many of the artifacts found at the site are on display including weapons and jewelry.

During its maritime heyday shipyards lined the banks of the River Tyne and were the main employers in the town. This heritage has been marked in South Shields with a number of artworks on the docks and landings. Among these is Fleet, a collection of stainless steel ships made to reflect the light and water. Also, Ferry Approach transformed an underpass linking a landing to the town centre. It is now a brightly colored area which looks like a ship being constructed.

Many people visit South Shields for the Catherine Cookson tour. Trained guides give tours of some of the best known places from her books and her life. Interested parties can also visit the South Shields Museum. There are displays of her personal effects and awards and information highlighting her importance to the area.

Marsden Rock is a famous local landmark. The impressive natural structure changed in 1996 when the archway section fell down. However, it is still a much visited site for its sea bird colonies and natural beauty. There is a pub built into the cliff face called the Marsden Grotto which is accessible by lift or stairs carved from the rock.

South Shields is a small town with a lot to offer. There are long seafront walkways, picturesque beaches, historical buildings, fascinating industries, cultural activities and more. There are also a number of interesting historical landmarks to be celebrated here. The first self righting lifeboat was launched in the town and it boasts Souter Lighthouse, the first with an electric light.
